One of opera's greatest tragic heroes, the mythical Moor of Venice, has never been performed by a Black man. Composer Giuseppe Verdi's powerful opera, Otello, was first performed at La Scala, Milan, February 7, 1887. Dramatic tenor Francesco Tamagno was the first to don the personae of the tragic dark-complected Moor. Subsequently, other great tenors have followed suit--Giovanni Martinelli, Mario Del Monaco, James McCracken, Lauritz Melchior, Jon Vickers, Ramon Vinay, Placido Domingo, et al--all of European-descent. Nearly one hundred and twenty years later, there still has never been anyone of African-descent who has personified the tragic character of Otello on the grand operatic scale.
'Ideale' is an original, full-length feature musical-drama that backdrop the works of opera's greatest composers: Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Wagner, etc. This unique story begins in the present with the leading character, Malcolm Witherspoon. On the eve of his debut performance as Otello at La Scala, Malcolm starts to reflect on the people and events that have lead him to where he is presently. Through series of nostalgic flashbacks, we follow his evolution from the early childhood days with the only family he has ever known, his grandfather Beauford. Upon the death of his beloved grandfather, he is placed through several foster homes of which he spent his last with the widowed, Ruthy Parks. At the behest of best friends, Allen and George, Malcolm moves into the heart of a big city to broaden his perception of art, learning and fun.
